ShawSportz (a subsidiary of Kedron Wavell Services Club) now has the sporting lease over Shaw Estate.

SHAW ESTATE

This large area of parkland includes sections that are also recognised under alternative park names of Murray Duus Park and Bennelong Park.

William Shaw and family came to Australia from England settling in Brisbane during 1865.  The voyage to Australia was tragic with the loss of one of his daughters and his wife.  He later married Mary Ann Hall and settled on a property of almost 60 hectares originally belonging to the Trill family, and established a dairy farm.  The house known as Shaw's Villa was on high ground overlooking Kedron Brook opposite Kedron Lodge.

In the 1920's, all the Shaw's land was sold to T M Burke with the exception of an acre upon which stood Shaw's Villa.  T M Burke in conjunction with the Queensland Development Company, sold small lots to speculators Australia-wide, although most were resumed later for non payment of rates.

An army encampment was located upon what had been T M Burke subdivision land during World War II.

Shaw Estate Sporting Leases

Two lease applications were made to Council during the mid 1960's jointly from St James' School and St Colombans, and also from Brisbane Hockey Association.  Neither were successful although the interest sparked action from Council resulting in closure of road reserves that were a legacy of earlier land subdivision.

Council also responded by indicating that it planned an Olympic stadium on the site and that an overall plan would be developed for the parkland along Kedron Brook between Sandgate Road and Benelong Street.  Shaw Estate was one of three sites chosen by Council as a package within Brisbane's unsuccessful 1978 Commonwealth Games bid.  Shaw Estate was not chosen to support Brisbane's stadium as part of the successful 1982 Commonwealth Games bid.

In 1972 Council developed four sports fields through levelling and top dressing.  Council granted summer tenancies to the Queensland Women's Cricket Association and Queensland Cricket Association during the 1976/77 season.

During 1982 Council granted approval to name the area leased by Teachers-Northern Districts Rugby League Football Club as the `Hugh Courtney Oval'.  On 30 September 1983 Teachers Northern Districts Rugby Football Club was granted a lease over part of Shaw Estate for a twenty-year period.

In 1996 a twenty-year lease was granted to the Brisbane Sports Association as an amalgamation of Valley Hockey Club, Northern Districts Rugby Football Club within the City Sports Association.

Kedron Wavell Services Club announced in 1997 that it would enter into a lease over part of Shaw Estate and Shaw Park as an umbrella and permanent base for associated sub leases.

Old Quarry Site section of Shaw Estate

In October 1987 Council approved that the vacant old quarry site on Shaw Road north of the smaller creek be incorporated as parkland for provision of additional public recreation facilities.
