WARBURTON PARK
BANYO

Warburton Park is named in honour of the Warburton family, who were well known pioneers in the Northgate, Nundah and surrounding districts.

William Henry Warburton was born in Manchester (England) in 1844.  He became a blacksmith and with his wife Mary and five of their children, left Liverpool on the "Renfrewshire" on 12th October 1863, arriving in Brisbane 3½ months later.

The Warburtons first settled at Nundah, later moving to the Toowoomba area.  After William became ill the family returned to Nundah.  They finally settled at 29 Wellington Street Virginia. At that time Wellington Street (and nearby Downfall Road) was named Sandgate Road, the main thoroughfare from Brisbane to Sandgate.  In 1929, Sandgate Road moved approximately 300m to the west, to its present location.

Great grandson Ted Warburton, was a well-known identity of Virginia and Northgate.  For many years he had a sand, gravel and soil supply business in the district.  He lived on a property in Nixon Street, adjoining that of his great grandparents.  This was later subdivided for housing (Chrisrodney Street area).

Another well-known Warburton was James (Jim) a son of William Henry.  He took up land at Northgate and started a champion pig stud that soon became widely known for its registered brand name 'Northgate'.  The piggery was located on the north-eastern side of Toombul Road, between the Sandgate railway line and Harold Street (Warburton's Paddock).

Queensland Railways acquired the land shortly after World War II.  The subsequent buildings were intended for the servicing and maintenance of electric trains.  However, after a change of government in 1957, the electric train plans were shelved and the land was leased to the State Electricity Commission.

Today, the land is taken up by the Northlink Industrial Estate, Telstra Stores and Powerlink (State Electricity Transmission Corporation).

For many years William John Warburton (William Henry's son) operated a blacksmith's shop on Nudgee Rd, Northgate, near the Toombul Rd intersection.  The shop closed in the 1960s.
